Giving F.A.Q.
Why give to the Kingdom of God? What's the significance of giving a portion of my finances to the church? At Nelson Avenue Community Church (NACC), money is used to help fund the cause of Christ. We therefore would like to answer questions people may have regarding giving.

What are your basic beliefs about money?
We believe that God wants us to give generously, cheerfully and faithfully. We believe that part of becoming awholehearted follower of Jesus is learning to trust Him in every area of our lives, including financially. God's Word is clear, if we honour Him with our tithes (to help fund the work of God through the local church), He will bless us (Malachi 3). When it comes to handling money, we follow the following core principles:
  • The contributions of our church body go directly towards operating the church and funding the ministries God has called us to;
  • Our church budget is based on what God wants to happen, not on what amount of money might be contributed;
  • Contributions the church receives are to be spent to further God's work, not saved for the future.
We believe these things strike at the heart of how God wants money to be used as seen in the Bible.

Where do the monies collected during a Sunday service go?
There are two offerings collected. The first offering collected (burgundy bag) is for the church budget (operating costs). The second offering collected (blue bag) is for the cause announced that Sunday (e.g. CRWRC, Bethesda, Living Waters, etc.) unless otherwise indicated by you. 100% of the monies collected from the second offering goes toward that specific cause of the day.

Where does the revenue come from to cover the operating costs of NACC?
Approximately 80% of the revenue is budgeted to come from donation receipts. The remaining 20% comes from the Nelson Avenue daycare, and the Joe-Un Church rental.

Why should I give regularly to the operating costs of the church?
As the graph below indicates, regular cash flow is critical to paying the church's bills on time and avoids having to borrow money to do so. Just as most of us rely on a regular income to pay our bills, so does NACC.

How can I give to the operating costs of the church?
There are several ways to give to the operating costs of the church:
  • Simply put a cheque (with "Budget" marked on the notes line) in the burgundy offering bag during the Sunday collection. Alternately, put your cheque in a budget envelope and put in the budget box.
  • Give one of the deacons your post-dated cheques (marked budget) to be redeemed as you indicate.
  • Set up a monthly PAR (Pre-Authorized Remittance) plan where the bank account of your choosing will be debited the amount you specify on the 20th of each month for as long as you like. Download the PAR form or obtain one from the church office via email or physical copy to fill out at your convenience.

How much should I give?
"Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."   2 Corinthians 9:7

"On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made."   1 Corinthians 16:2

"Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the LORD your God."   Exodus 23:19

"Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops"   Proverbs 3:9

Can I get a tax receipt for my donations?
Yes. As long as we have your name and address, you will be issued an annual tax receipt.

What are "NACC Donation Dollars" or "Burnaby Bucks"?
NACC Donation Dollars are an easy way of donating to the weekly offering instead of using cash. Their benefit is that you will be issued a tax receipt at the end of the year. To request these, simply write a cheque made out to Nelson Avenue Community Church and indicate "NACC Donation Dollars" and the denominations you would like ($2, $5, $10, & $20 are available).

What are those little brown envelopes for?
The envelopes are used to put cash or cheques into, and to designate specific causes for that donation. You can designate donating to the Budget, or you want to buy Burnaby Bucks, or give to some other cause. The envelopes contain an envelope number which is representative of your name and address for tax receipt purposes. Kent Arnott will issue a number if you don't already have one.

Can I donate regularly to other charities through the PAR plan?
Yes. Simply indicate which approved charity you would like to give to regularly when you fill out the PAR (Pre-Authorized Remittance) form. This can be changed at any time. Please contact Kent Arnott for details.

Where can I get more info?
If you have further questions you can talk to any of the deacons, or Kent Arnott (the church treasurer). Your deacons are: Deborah Ashton, Nestor Ceron, Wilson (Weisong) Chen, Grace Hu, John Klein, and John Schaap.
